Perception Insights recently facilitated the refresh of Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland’s (the Commission) organisation values. Having realised that the Commission’s values hadn’t been reviewed in quite a number of years and with a hybrid working environment since COVID, senior leadership felt that developing a consensus among teams on values and ongoing mission would be a worthwhile investment in staff and future service provision.

Rebecca designed a process to get multi-layered feedback from all staff and then take the results through successive rounds of discussion and evolution to landing on organisational values that resonated loud and clear for everyone. The entire process, from workshop creation for staff engagement to values definition was completed in just three months, start to finish.

Choosing a virtual whiteboard format, Rebecca developed a series of questions to encourage input from staff on what they felt was important to them, the clients they served and how the Commission was viewed by stakeholders and the public. She supported the initial sift through all submissions by staff and preparation of the discussion papers to enable the senior leadership team to create a long list of potential values for further voting by the whole staff group.

Following the staff vote, she facilitated a one-day virtual session with the Commission’s leaders to interpret the results, identify the final values and the behaviours that brought them to life. It was important for everyone that the new values were recognisable and held true to the staff engagement process yet also stretched the ambition of the Commission and positioned it clearly as a champion and advocate for the some of the most vulnerable in society. The Executive Team was also keen that the new values could be implemented easily in day-to-day practice by staff across all levels of the organisation, collectively strengthening the working culture and employee experience.

As a result, the Commission now has refreshed values to inform their ongoing Organisational Development strategy and plan to deliver the best services in its advocacy as a leading and independent voice for people with mental illness, learning disabilities, dementia and related conditions throughout Scotland.

Ashley says: “We asked Rebecca to support us in the refresh of our organisation’s values. Rebecca recommended a suitable approach based on our objectives, sense checked workforce feedback, and facilitated a day long workshop with the leadership team. Most significantly, she helped to challenge our thinking, engender shared ownership and responsibility, and got us to a place where we landed our new values and behaviours. Throughout the commission, Rebecca was approachable, creative and excelled at finding tailored solutions that felt bespoke to our organisation. I would have no hesitation enlisting her support again.”
